Entropion/EctropionWhat is it?
Entropion is the inward rolling or turning of the eyelid margin. Ectropion is the abnormal outward rolling of the eyelid margin. These condition occur more frequently in the lower lid than the upper and is more common in dogs than cats. Certain breeds, such as Bloodhound, Bulldog, Retrievers, Chow Chow, Rottweiler, and Shar Pei are more prone to developing the condition. |
Symptoms |
Symptoms include epiphora (excessive tearing), squinting, rubbing at the eye and in chronic cases corneal ulceration and vascularization.

Treatment |
Most dogs with entropion require surgical correction. This surgery involves removing a small portion of the skin to tighten the eyelid. Temporary eyelid tacking may be used in very young dogs or until surgery can be scheduled to keep your pet comfortable. Definitive surgical correction is often delayed until the dog has a more mature head conformation at 6 months of age. If uncorrected, subsequent corneal ulceration, pigmentation, and scarring may produce vision loss.
