Standard diagnostics

Standard diagnostic testing is used to provide information about the overall health of your pet's eyes.

Schirmer Tear Test

This test will determine the amount of tear your pet produces. A small strip of calibrated paper is placed into the conjunctival sac (into the lower lid); here the paper will wick up moisture from the eye. The paper is held in place for 60 seconds and then the amount of tear is measured. Abnormalities in tear production can lead to eye diseases such as Keratconjunctivitis Sicca and Chronic Pigmentary Keratitis.

Fluoroscein and Rose Bengal Staining

This test is used to determine if there is any erosions of the cornea (ie. scratch, ulcer, or laceration).  It involves placing stain onto the eye and flushing out all of the excess. The stain adheres to areas where the outer layer of the cornea is missing. Any remaining stain shows as fluorescent green and allows us to better visualize the size, depth and type of ulcer.

Tonometry

This is test measures the pressure inside your pet's eye. Abnormalities in IOP can lead to a diagnosis of conditions such as Glaucoma and Uveitis. Our office has the capability to perform both applanation tonometry and rebound tonometry. We will determine which instrument is best suited for your pet.
